Summary: DO NOT BUY -- Persistent Chemical Odor
Comment: All of the plastic parts have a strong chemical odor. This was reduced somewhat after sponging with soapy water, but still remains. The steam also carries the strong smell.
The odor comes not only from the external plastic parts, but is also on the inside of the lid and from the rubbery sealer inside the carafe, which comes in contact with the water.
I've tried boiling a dozen batches of water, I've tried cleaning with vinegar, and with soap. I don't know whether it will eventually go away, but really, I shouldn't *have* to worry about this. It should have been taken care of by the manufacturer.
Given safety issues with other made-in-China products, I have no confidence in this device and I'm surprised and disappointed by Capresso.

Summary: Very impressed
Comment: This was a gift to myself for Christmas and after reading lot of reviews on different pots and whatnot on Amazon, I went with this one.
I've had it a week now, using it everyday and so far all I can say is how impressed and pleased I am with this pot. It looks good just sitting there on the counter, but more importantly, it functions as advertised.
I like the auto-off, it has a substantial feel to it, not cheap. The base has a rubber base, (that's where I think some smell plastic)... cause it's not the decanter... that's glass and metal.
If this pot acts up, I'll amend this review later on. So if you're looking for a hot water pot, this little gem should get consideration.

Summary: Great Electric Kettle
Comment: I had a Black & Decker kettle, that was a few years old and quite frankly, rarely used. A couple of months ago we started using it twice a day, until it suddenly stopped working.
That set me on a search for a new electric kettle.
I did not have many criteria, just really three:
- It had to be cordless
- I wanted one that could be positioned in any which way on its base.
- It boiled water
I came across the Capresso on Amazon. It met my two criteria, plus I liked its size, looks and that it was glass.
I was somewhat concerned about the reviews referring to a chemical smell, but there seemed to be more good reviews than bad reviews.
It also struck me that people invested what seemed like an inordinate level of energy and emotion in, let's face it, something boils water.
Some of the reviews struck me as verging on hysteria, making it sound like the kettle was made out of kryptonite.
The Capresso arrived just yesterday. Yep, it's been here just 1 day, so let me give you my impression:
1. I'm not quite sure what the talk is about a smell. I think I have an extremely sensitive nose and it doesn't smell particularly foul, if in fact at all. It smells sort of like a kettle.
2. It boils water quickly
3. It's attractive
4. It takes up little counter space
I'm extremely pleased with the purchase and am very happy I chose it.

Summary: i love this kettle!
Comment: I was a little worried about putting this on my wish list because of the likelihood of getting a chemical smell... well, I got it for Sol Invictus and I am so excited!! It's beautiful and fun to watch, it works fine so far (have only had it for a week), and the smell cleared out after a cleaning and 4 or 5 non-drinking boils. I love being able to make tea all throughout the day without dealing with pans and without all the wasted energy that goes into heating water on the stove.
I love the simple design, which is contemporary without being overly modern or pretentious. I absolutely detest plastic, especially in food heating applications, so I'm glad I'll never have to upgrade again. I really feel like this is the best a kettle can get. And it's quite affordable, to boot!
Lastly, I'd like to note that I use water that's been filtered through a Brita filter. Maybe others are having issues because their water has impurities that react to the manufacturing chemicals or heating element...? Who knows.. I'm happy and totally recommend this kettle.

Summary: Excellent except for the plastic lid
Comment: The design looks good and it heats water quickly. I agree with others that it has a strong smell of plastic which lasts for several weeks. The lid does not detach so it is a bit difficult to clean. it pours nicely. I have had other products by capresso which have lasted for more that 15 years despite daily use, and this product has the same sturdy well made feel. I would give it 5 stars if it did not have the plastic smell which makes me wonder what chemicals are being dissolved in the water as it heats.
