Summary: I could not stand Rachel
Comment: I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the way Emily Griffin narrates, it is super entertaining and fun. However, I could not stand the main charachter Rachel who is cheating on her best friend of 25 years's fiance.
Darcy was selfish and a pain in the a$$, but it still did not justify Rachel continuisly sleeping with her fiancee. If Rachel was unhappy with Darcy over the years, she should have either ended the friendship or talked to her about what was bothering her. Whatever Darcy was or was not, she was fun and a go getter and Rachel the opposite, she had no back bone what so ever to ask for the things she wanted so you hear her whine about that the entire book! She could not even stand up for herself and ask Dex to choose, instead she kept bedding Dex while she pretended to be Darcy's friend.
The part that bothered me the most is when Darcy went to Rachel's apartment for a girl's slumber party and Rachel knew all along what she had done and was still pretending to be Darcy's best friend.
Ughhhh, I just hope that none of us as women have friends like Rachel. She is the worst kind, she seems nice, quite and passive, but she will stab you in the back with a knife the size of her arm!

Comment: Despite the 4 half star reviews, I was sorely disappointed when I read this book. Honestly, while I can somewhat understand her falling for her BFF's fiance, what I cannot stomach is that she keeps sleeping with Dex even though he doesn't give any signs of breaking up with Darcy. And she doesn't even question this until the very end. The whole time I am waiting for her to grow a backbone, but when she does, it is not at all satisfactory. She still allows Darcy to run roughshod over her (even though it is Darcy who is knocked up by another guy) and Rachel even allows her parents to accuse her of stealing Darcy's fiance without so much as standing up for herself. Basically, the most annoying heroine ever written about - apart from the protagnists of Shanna & Flowers from the storm. I have no desire whatsoever to read Darcy's story...

Comment: Something Borrowed is one of the best chick lit books I've ever read. Emily Giffin's writing is effortless. She uses few words to paint a picture that is richly vivid. In Rachel, she created a heroine who is easy to empathize with. Giffin revealed her insight into the female psyche through her main character. Rachel does good not because she is straight and narrow by nature but because she is afraid of being caught. Rachel doesn't go for the perfect guy not because she doesn't want him but because she doesn't think she is good enough. Giffin also understands the complexity of female friendships. Rachel and Darcy are best friends despite their core differences because female friends are simply that strong when it has lasted through the years. A betrayal between two girl friends is the highest offense. I have the highest admiration for Giffin's writing. I usually think of chick lit as fluff but Griffin's book need to be appreciated at a much higher level.
